apparition

C found this stick bug, or walking stick, on the screen to our dining room early this morning. Having never seen one other than in a classroom terrarium we were all pretty excited, though some were a little hesitant to touch. A quick google revealed that stick bugs are very common in the subtropics and tropics but can be found world wide; check out National Geographic for some facts. The stick insect is in the order Phasmida, which is derived from the greek word apparition - how fitting. In the same google search we found a wonderful story about a stick insect found on an island in the Tasman Sea..read on!
